Appeals to Emotion

Whenever we make decisions, our reasoning usually(most often) are based off of our emotions. Emotions play a big role in general during our daily lives.Whether it is to make a decision on when to get going on homework, studying for exams, getting to work on time, handling relationships, or even when shopping. Most often, those decisions includes us using the idea according to Epstein's text that, "you should believe or do something because you feel a certain way"(191).

For example, there are many beer commercials out there especially in between baseball and football and basketball games. They are used to help hype up the individuals watching the games, to make people feel it will give them a better experience or enjoyment if they drink that certain beer. There's this one commerical on t.v. advertising the beer "Cereva Dos Equis" that I see often while watching the Giants game. The main guy advertising it says he doesn't drink beer much, but when he does, he chooses this beer. He chooses this beer because he "feels like it and it tastes good to him." Appeal to emotion was appealing to me because it made me think of watching those beer commercials and how if an individual chooses that beer, they won't be sorry, that is also including the fact of drinking responsibly and not drinking while driving.

  1. That is definitely a good example of appeal to emotion. The commercials that play during shows are targeted to a specific audience. Beer and sports are linked to each other because sports are so social. And often at social gatherings, you are going to find beer. People like to drink it to relax and watch the game. It sounds like in this case, appeal to emotion was used appropriately for the argument to drink their beer. The commercial is showing you a man who does not drink beer often, but when he does drink beer, he chooses "Cereva Dos Equis" because it is superior to the other beers. The argument is not misleading if this man truly feels that way.

  2. Beer commercials are a great example. Especially that one. It's funny, which heightens the emotional context. There is nothing hidden about what they are doing either. Right out in the open he says "I do it because I like it" - the message - you can do things just because you want to also. Be independant! Enjoy the game! And drinking this beer will enhance the experience.

The advertisement is true if when you taste the beer it really does taste better. Otherwise any beer should provide the same enhancement.

  3. I liked the example you use. I often find myself falling into that trap. They show a person drinking a cold tasty beer in the middle of a sports game, and you're like damn I need to get some beer so I can relax and have a great time. Its not really a bad thing cause you kinda get into the mindset of wanting to relax, and beer does help you relax....but it is sort of dubious how they go about it when they say it taste better than other beers. Yeah so I liked your example about beer, nice post!
