Subjective and Objective Claims

A subjective claim is based in an individual’s or group’s feeling, or opinion and is not used as a basis from factual information. An example of a subjective claim would be, when I usually hear Giants fans that I know, also including myself saying how Giants are the best. That is solely based on how we feel and think, because truth of the matter is, statistically wise, Giants are not the best. There many other teams in the Major Leagues who are better than us. We just say that because we are fans of the team and feel it is necessary to say our team is the best.

An objective claim is opposite of a subjective claim. Unlike a subjective claim, an objective claim is based on facts (the truth, not a fallacy). An example of a objective claim would be the other day when my mom had told me I had left something out in our living room, and I thought I had put it away. However, actually it was still there.

  1. The way that subjective and objective claims are described shows both examples are valid. This showed that in subjective claims, they deal with more of opinions of different views of beliefs, thinking and feelings. The example that she put that she likes the Giants (since she is a Giant's fan) shows her view on the Giants. The way that her objective claims is justice; the only error that I notice from this is that when giving an example of an objective claim, it was typed as a subjective claim rather than an objective claim. In any event, they both share perfect examples.

  2. In spite of your statement that objectively, Giants are not the best – score-wise, they must be better in some manner, or why would they have so many ardent fans?

I think the argument may not be complete. Maybe the giants are best FOR YOU because they represent the area?

It gets down to the definition of 'best'. Objectively, they may be best if you define best as 'represent my area of the country best'. Or, maybe they sell the best popcorn, or have the best personalities.

'Best' is very subjective unless you explain what you mean by best. So….I think you can say we have the best team.

  3. I thought your explanation was very good, to the point, and easy to read. I like your style of writing.

jtouma4 was correct about your last paragraph which stated the opposite claim; however, we can all tell by the way you started the paragraph that you meant "objective" claim.

I learned all of this stuff many years ago, but it was nice to read about it again because I had forgotten all about the details of valid and strong arguments, subjective and objective claims. It is opening my eyes more when I hear people speak. I think it is working too well because now people are starting to annoy me when they go off topic and don't finish their logical thought! ;o) I can tell when they are making statements based on opinions, feelings and/or fact. :o)
